This property is located on one of the highest elevations in Palm Beach. The new gardens accompanied the building of a new house. The seaside location provided an idyllic setting, but also came with challenges as the coastal environment can be harsh. The twenty-foot change in elevation between the road and main lot, which can be considered extreme in Palm Beach, provided unique design opportunities not often afforded in town. The gardens are divided into four main areas: the motor court, the central courtyard, the western pool garden, and the seaside garden. Though each garden is separate, each are linked visually and physically to entice visitors to move from one space to the next. Entering the property through the main gate, visitors are moved through a dense canopy of native sea grape trees that leads to an open motor court. The entry sequence of compression and shade through the sea grapes leading into the open and sunny motor court that reveals views of the house was carefully studied and crafted. From the motor court, the courtyard and western pool garden reveal themselves, which then offer ques to draw visitors to the seaside garden. The seaside and courtyard gardens were designed to provide an informal setting composed mainly of plants and grass with very little paving. The western pool garden that takes advantage of the grade change can almost be considered a folly in the garden, drawing on many elements of Italian Renaissance gardens. The landward exposure of this garden also provides a needed respite from the harsh seaborn winds that can be common during the Palm Beach winters. Throughout the gardens, unique and intricate details that draw and are inspired by classical architecture and gardens abound. They create a unique and beautiful garden that compliments the new house, site, and the client’s lifestyle.
