The Botanical Garden Approach

About Us

Our Story

Founded in 1982, our philosophy incorporates a “botanical garden” approach fused with the historic and classical formal garden design framework, creating exotic and thoughtful design solutions.

The elegance of classic gardens immersed in lush tropical foliage; the serenity of a garden; the intrigue of a secret jungle path; the splendor of a fountain; the grandeur of a formal vista… SMI is a landscape architectural design firm specializing in master planning, garden design, landscape preservation and restoration, botanical gardens/parks, civic and commercial master planning.

Today the firm has refined its staff and services to encompass complex projects utilizing employees with diverse design and consulting skills, including garden designers, landscape architects, site planners, construction managers and project managers.

The firm’s vision, coupled with staff expertise, places SMI in a unique position to have total quality control over the design, implementation and maintenance of detailed and context-sensitive design solutions.  We are located in the heart of beautiful downtown Palm Beach with clients throughout the United States and the Bahamas.

We invite you to explore our website. View the galleries with pictures of both private and public spaces.  Feel free to contact us with comments or inquiries about our services.

Garden Design

We work closely with our clients to gain an understanding of the desires and needs, both the philosophical and the practical.

Landscape Restoration

Landscape restoration aims to reconcile economic, social and environmental concerns within a holistic framework.

Civic Master Planning

A conceptual guide for making the connection between buildings, social settings, and their environment.

Design Approach

We approach the design of our gardens looking at three key factors – the site, the architecture and the client. By understanding these three elements, we develop a design that is in keeping with the environmental conditions and scale of the site, speaks to the architecture of the building and provides the client with a garden that meets their program and needs.

Ecological Impact

The design of a sustainable landscape encompasses the three pillars of sustainable development: economic well-being, social equity and environmental protections. Creating a sustainable landscape requires consideration of ecology, history, cultural associations, sociopolitical dynamics, soils, land use, and architecture. Methods used to create sustainable landscapes include recycling, restoration, species reintroduction, use of native plants and many more.

Project Management

Projects differ in scale and complexity, however, they are separated into various stages to allow for ease of management. Due to the variation in project types, the staging of landscape architecture projects requires a flexible approach to project management. The project stages often follow a similar pattern however, they may be shortened or not undertaken due to various factors including scale, complexity and client requirements.
