The concept for the grounds emerged quickly. The exterior, or public side of the house, would have a brick driveway surrounded by native silver saw palmettos and a single royal poinciana tree. The existing wall to the front door had large arched openings. These were walled up with openings on the upper areas. A gate was added as an entrance. The swimming pool by the front door was reconverted to a water lily koi pond. Brickwork was used to edge it, along with coquina stones. Additionally, two plinths with water spouts along the wall. One opening of the arched front courtyard was left open as a connector to the garden and the new vaulted pergola. The pergola was to be a secluded area by the new swimming pool. The pool itself could be viewed from a high loggia coming out of the house, which was tiled with cement Cuban tile. Directly centered with the garden steps is the view to the lighthouse; magical at night. At the end of it, we designed a round fountain with an intricate egg-stone-on-edge floor. A small oval wall opening to the bay beyond. The balance of the garden is mostly based under an existing banyan tree. A terrace with sun and shade elements. This contrast of opposites worked harmoniously through out the garden making it a charming yet unpredictable space.
